Making An Herb Garden
Herb gardens traditionally were made in various shapes to give each herb its own space. There are no rules about how an herb garden should be laid out, or what sort of herbs must be planted. The main thing is that the herb garden must be pleasing to the eye of the owner and contain the herbs of his or her choice. In cases where there is not sufficient space in the garden to lay out a special herb garden, herbs can be planted between shrubs and flowering plants. Many of them are attractive and aromatic and will not detract from the overall look of the garden. It is also a good idea to plant herbs in pots, which can be moved around.
Plan your herb garden in a sunny spot in the garden, protected from excessive wind, rain and frost in winter. It is sensible to place the herb garden close to the kitchen where it will be convenient to pick fresh herbs while you are cooking. Plant herbs according to the space you have available. It is no good planting herbs that will grow too large for the pot or space you have. Plant herbs that you know you will use, it is futile to plant herbs that you will never use, they will only take up space that you could have used for something you like.
If you are planting herbs in pots, make sure that you add good compost to the soil, and have enough drainage so that the pots do not become water logged. Traditional herb gardens were planted in geometric shapes so that all the herbs were accessible. In modern gardens herbs are often planted around a central point to give more interest. It could be a fountain or a rose bush or a garden statue. Whatever takes your fancy will make an attractive focal point. Although herbs are very often not as attractive as other garden plants, they have the advantage of being aromatic and useful.
